Description

Devil's Advocate is a game of strategic maneuvering for two players, where simple rules give way to complex and nuanced gameplay. Designed by Andrew Juell and first introduced in 2010, this abstract strategy game takes place on a board made up of hexagonal cells, where players take turns placing stones to outmaneuver their opponent. What makes Devil's Advocate interesting is the twist on traditional stone-placing games - normally, the black player can only place white stones, while the white player has the option to place either white or black stones, allowing for some clever tactics. As the game unfolds, players need to think carefully about where to place their stones, as the placement of a white stone can trigger a flip of all stones in a row to black, dramatically changing the balance of power on the board. The game continues until the board is full, at which point the player with the majority of stones of their color is declared the winner. To balance out the game and account for the first-player advantage, the game introduces the concept of balancing stones, which can be played by the black player to even out the odds. This adds a layer of depth to the game, as players need to strategically decide when to use these stones to maximum effect. Despite its simple rules, which can be explained quickly, Devil's Advocate offers a rich and engaging experience for fans of abstract strategy games. The game's unique mechanics, including pattern building and variable player powers, ensure that each game is different from the last, and players will need to adapt their strategies to come out on top. Whether played with a physical board or simply with pen and paper, Devil's Advocate is a game that will challenge and reward players, making it a great choice for those looking for a thought-provoking and entertaining experience.
