Description
In Ampel, which is German for traffic signal, two players go head to head in a battle of wits to create as many traffic signals as possible. The goal is to get three consecutive discs in a line, in the order of red, yellow, and green, with the twist being that one player controls the red discs and the other controls the green discs, while the yellow discs remain neutral and stationary. On each turn, players must navigate a triangular grid, moving one of their own discs, then one of their opponent's discs, and finally adding a new disc to the board, all while trying not to give their opponent an easy win. The game is easy to learn, but challenging to master, with simple rules that belie a depth of strategy. As players compete to capture yellow discs by forming traffic signals, they must think carefully about their moves, taking into account the movement rules and the layout of the grid. With a playtime of just 15 minutes, Ampel is a quick and exciting game that's perfect for a casual evening or a competitive tournament. Designed by José Manuel Astilleros García-Monge and first published in 2013, Ampel is a great example of an abstract strategy game that's both fun and engaging, with a unique blend of pattern building and tactical maneuvering that will keep you coming back for more.
