Description

Guns of the Askari is a game that drops you into the midst of World War I, specifically the often overlooked campaign in East Africa. Designed by John Gorkowski, a specialist in WWI games, this game brings to life the complex and dynamic conflict that played out in this region. With 280 full color counters representing everything from rifle companies to naval units, you'll feel like you're right there on the battlefield. The game is designed for 2 to 3 players, allowing for a unique dynamic where the German, British, and Belgian forces can clash, and the Portuguese can even potentially join the German side. As you play through one of the four different scenarios, you'll experience the evolution of the conflict firsthand. The game starts with conventional force-on-force battles, but as the war drags on, it shifts into a guerrilla war, with the German commander Von Lettow-Vorbeck using hit and run tactics to evade his pursuers. With a playtime of around 6 hours, you'll have plenty of time to immerse yourself in the game and try out different strategies. The rules are of normal complexity, so if you're familiar with board games, you should have no problem picking it up. With its unique blend of land and naval battles, Guns of the Askari is a game that will challenge and engage you, and leave you wondering if you can do better than the Allied commanders who fought in this forgotten corner of WWI.
