Description

Christmas at White Mountain is a small but engaging board game that's perfect for a quick yet strategic gaming session. Designed by Amabel Holland, this 2016 game is based on the Battle of White Mountain, one of the early battles of the Thirty Years War. The game is designed for two players and can be played in 15 to 30 minutes, making it an excellent choice for those looking for a shorter gaming experience. The rules are simple and can be explained quickly, allowing players to dive into the game without much setup. The gameplay revolves around dice rolling and simulation, where each player has a pool of dice that they roll each turn and then commit to a particular unit's box. The type and number of dice that can be placed in each box vary, adding a layer of strategy to the game. For example, the Bohemian Right and the Catholic League Infantry use sixes, but the latter can gain at most one die per turn, reflecting the challenges of mounting an attack on a strong defensive position. The game also features a unique mechanic where cavalry and artillery can screen and discourage enemy attacks, adding a cat-and-mouse feel to the gameplay. Players must balance their defensive and offensive moves, trying to gain control of the tempo and launch successful attacks while preventing their enemy from doing the same. As players take turns rolling dice and making decisions, they must consider the strengths and weaknesses of their position. The Imperial/Catholic League player has a more flexible position, with the ability to place dice in two boxes per turn and utilize each die result. The Bohemian player, on the other hand, can only place dice in one box per turn and has limited use for certain die results. This asymmetry adds depth to the game, making each side's decisions meaningful and challenging. With its short playtime and simple rules, Christmas at White Mountain is an excellent choice for those looking for a compact and engaging wargame experience.
