Description

Viceroys is a game of exploration and colonization, set in the 15th and 16th centuries, where 1 to 7 players take on the roles of European powers vying for dominance. The game is based on a historical map, but with a twist - the map is intentionally inaccurate, adding an extra layer of challenge and realism to the game. Each player has unique national differences and advantages, with seagoing nations like Portugal, Spain, England, France, and the Dutch competing against overland colonizers like Russia and Turkey. The game also allows for general European war, adding an extra level of complexity and strategy. As players navigate the game, they'll encounter event cards that cover every aspect of the period, from economic fluctuations to military conflicts. But what really sets Viceroys apart is the addition of "jobs" within the game, where players can earn extra income by taking on roles like The Rules Lawyer, who resolves disputes and keeps the game on track. With multiple scenarios and rules for 1 or 2 players, Viceroys offers a high level of replayability and depth, making it a great choice for fans of wargames and strategy. First published in 1986, Viceroys has stood the test of time, and its normal complexity makes it accessible to anyone familiar with board games, despite its lengthy 240-minute playtime.
