Description
Barbarians at the Gates is a card-driven game for two players that drops you into the tumultuous final century of the Western Roman Empire. As the Roman player, you'll command the loyal legions and allied Germanic tribes, while the Barbarian player will lead the charge of Usurper Emperors and savage Germanic peoples. The game unfolds on a point-to-point map of the Western Roman Empire, with 11 diocese and various spaces connected by Roman roads, rougher connections, and river routes. Players take turns playing cards to activate generals, launch sieges, recruit new legions, and lead barbarian raids, all while vying for control of the empire. As you navigate the intricate web of alliances and rivalries, you'll encounter famous figures like Aetius, Magnentius, Atilla, and Alaric, and make decisions that will determine the fate of Western Europe. Will the Roman civilization spark a Renaissance, or will Europe succumb to the Dark Ages? With a playtime of 120 to 300 minutes, Barbarians at the Gates offers a deep and immersive experience for fans of ancient history and wargames. The game's normal complexity makes it accessible to experienced board game players, and the campaign and battle card-driven mechanics ensure a unique and engaging experience each time you play. Designed by Shayne Logan and Kris Van Beurden, this 2022 release is a must-play for anyone looking to explore the fascinating history of the Western Roman Empire's decline and fall.
